OUR PROJECTS

The primary recipient of the proceeds from the sale of Mel's Bracelets through the Friends of Mel Foundation is the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, where Mel was treated. Mel was enormously grateful to the staff who cared for her and encouraged her throughout her battle, and on days when Mel was well enough, she volunteered in the Infusion Center, bringing laughter and joy to all. Mel's generosity of spirit so touched the staff that they have installed a plaque in her honor in the clinic - a first for any patient.

The first grant of $250,000 has been made to Dr. Jerry Younger, Clinical Director of the Gillette Breast Center at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center. Dr. Younger is designing a study on quality of life issues for women who are five to ten years past their initial diagnosis, when the threat of breast cancer becomes secondary to other health issues. The purpose of the study is to improve the life and health outcomes of women post-breast cancer. Over two million of these women are living within the United States alone this year.
